At AFCON 2023 Round of 16, Nigeria navigates a win against an old foe, Cameroon

AFCON 2023

The Super Eagles at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast yesterday was not a glossy or dormineering performance but certainly majestic in seeing off old foe and "eternal rival" Cameroon from the tournament with a cushioning 2 : 0 scoreline.

Mention must be made of Victor Osimhen's energetic high press on the Cameroonian defence, which made Jean-Charles Castelletto to buckle under pressure and on surviving a harsh body check and fowl from him was able to steady himself and thread a well tailored pass to Ademola Lukeman to find the back of the  net, leaving Goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa, who is  a cousin to the more illustrous but maligned  Andre Onana scampering and sprawling to nowhere for Nigeria's first goal. Although not fully playing his part and living up to his billing as Africa's best player and one of the must lethal strikers in the world, his work rate and intelligent runs and decisions certainly aligns to that.

Most football keen watchers and analysts knew the capabilities of Ademola Lukeman, we all know what he can do and he came through flawlessly in this game, showing his mettle and potency with too clinical and emphatic finish for the two goals he scored for the team, the timing which were also moral and confident boosters that helped the Super Eagles to see out the game and send Cameroon home. He could have even crowned himself in more glory with creating too huge assists and chances in the game that didnot quite gel with the idea behind them. Yes, Lukeman did have a great game in this one.

Ola Aina, our "Oyinbo Captain" William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey and Frank Onyeka all shown in bright colours for their country in this crucial match, the downside and cause for concern is the injury to my main man, Goalkeeper  Stanley Nwabili. He is a strong lad, I have no doubt he will bounce back.

Next stop, the Quarter Finals!
